NOTD: Chevron Nail Art in Blue, Yellow and Black

I know that I've mentioned before that I like actually doing something with my nails once I swatch a color. After painting my nails with Sinful Colors - Ocean Side  last week, I loved the color too much to take it off.

I wasn't in the mood to do stamping or anything too involved, so tried to think of what kind of design I could do. What I came up with was this look - a blue, yellow and black chevron-tipped design <3

I had it in my mind that I wanted to pair the deep cerulean blue of Ocean Side with a yellow accent color. My selection of yellows is pretty limited, so I went with Butter London's Cheeky Chops. I really wish that I'd had more of a buttercup yellow or a yellow with a bit more orange in it for the stripe, but what I had wound up working.

For the tips, I wanted something darker that wouldn't clash with the yellow accent, and Secret Admirer by Sinful Colors worked perfectly. (I really should reveiw Secret Admirer sometime soon. It's really a great color)

This is actually a pretty simple manicure to do. Over the blue base, I used striping tape to tape off the chevron design, then painted the black on the tips. If I had been feeling patient, I could have taped again so that the yellow line would come out as crisp as the original black chevron line.... but I wasn't really feeling up to the work. Instead, I used a small brush that I'd cut up to try and line the chevron.  It didn't work HORRIBLY, but it didn't work perfectly either.

Yeah, I really need to get some nail art brushes. The yellow lines on the chevron design would have been a million times crisper/cleaner and easier to do if I had only had a liner brush. Thankfully, I just ordered a really cheap set from Amazon, but it won't be here for a few weeks.

Products used in this manicure were:
  • Blue (base): Sinful Colors - Ocean Side
  • Yellow (line): Butter London - Cheeky Chops
  • Sparkly Charcoal Black (tips): Sinful Colors - Secret Admirer

I might have to give this look a try again sometime down the road.

Now I'm going to bemoan the fact that I had to file down my nails from this length soon after taking this photo. I thought this was about the perfect length. This hand was fine, but I suffered some major breaks on my right hand. It looked strange with one hand's nails all long and the other's down to nubbins, so I took a bit of the length off of these until my right hand can regrow. *sigh* I don't look BAD with short nails since I have pretty long fingers, but I just like the look of a medium-length nail so much better.
